  • It's been a while since I've posted an entry.  Not a whole lot has been going on.  I guess I just wanted to have something to actually post about.

I did want to give all of you an update about my last post about Oprah’s show on child predators.  Within days of her show hundreds of thousands emailed their senators and as a result bill 1738 The Protect Our Children Act passed with flying colors!  Oprah said that she has never gotten so much hate mail from child predators who were mad at her for bringing the bill to America’s attention!

Nathan and I are doing well.  We are in the middle of a 13-week long financial class called Financial Peace University; taught by Dave Ramsey.  We’re loving it!  If you know anyone in financial trouble, or if you just want to learn how to invest and save for your future you should really consider taking this class!  Here’s a link to an intro video with Dave talking about the class…

Nathan bought me Sleeping Beauty about a month ago.  It was finally released on DVD!  It just didn't seem right watching it without Jody and Kelly and then playing dress-up afterwards.  Bossing them around, insisting that I could only be the one to play Aurora, because I had blonde hair.  Making them play the fairies.  Instead, I got stuck with my husband taking out his imaginary machine gun and shooting all the little animals as they were dancing with Aurora.  After giving him a "look" all he said was, "With the way you yell at the birds when they wake you up at 5:00am, you'd think you would be glad that I am knocking off a few of them for you!"  That's what I get for watching Sleeping Beauty with my husband.

On Thursday nights we are babysitting the McNeil twins.  Eli and Jayden are 9 months old and are crawling all over the place.  A few weeks ago Michelle had me take some family photos and the boy’s 9 month pictures.  We had a ball!

We had a bonfire night with Zach and Michelle a few weeks ago which was a lot of fun.

This past Thursday was Nathan’s 28th birthday.  We hadn’t taken any time off to spend some time alone together since our cruise in March of 2007.  He decided to take Wed, Thus and Fri off.  On Wednesday we drove up to Duluth for the day.  The weather was actually really nice and with it not being tourist season it wasn’t as busy.

We did some antique shopping and I found some damaged photos to restore and add to my portfolio.  This one didn't have a lot of damage, but I thought it was pretty funny.  It would be great framed in a beach house or bathroom.

On Thursday we celebrated by sleeping in and going to see a matinee, Eagle Eye.  We ate dinner at Chili's, our favorite restaurant.  On Friday we went to the Minneapolis Art Institute with Chris and Linda, it was a lot of fun.

On the way home we drove over the newly constructed and open 35W bridge.  In the summer of 2007 it had collapsed in the middle of rush-hour traffic.  A lot of people were injured and 11 were killed.  It was kind of a bitter-sweet day when the bridge opened this past September.

Later on we had dinner at Chris and Linda's.  She made ham and cheesy potatoes!  Yum!

In addition to this DQ ice creme cake she also made a pumpkin AND cherry pie!

                   20_Candles           22_Gift
We had to improvise with the candles.  We spent the rest of the night watching Chris hand out candy to kids and cuddling next to the fireplace.  Happy Birthday baby!

  • I know this is usually an upbeat blog, but I want to get the word out about this...

This post below is for adults only.  The topic is child rape and molestation.  Some of the statistics and quotes are graphic and disturbing.

I normally don’t watch Oprah, but on Monday I tuned in.  I have seen shows about child predators before, but this show made me sick.  I couln't stop crying.  Please read and take action.  Below are quotes and stats taken from the show…

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We all know child pornography has become a rampant problem since the Internet has been in exsistence.

Michelle Collins, Christine Feller and 48 other profilers work for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.  They are in charge of working with law enforcement to help capture abusers.

“When I come to work in the morning there are usually hundreds of reports that have arrived overnight regarding kids who are being actively abused.”  - Michelle Collins

“You’re watching a young girl, a video that starts out with a toddler.  You hear them giggle.  You hear that innocent laugh.  But when you can suddenly hear that giggle and that laugh turn into screams because they are being sexually assaulted.  Those are the things that I continually remember.  Often times people ask me how is it I can do this job.  It is difficult.  We’re here because we believe in the mission of rescuing these children and putting these abusers behind bars.”  - Christine Feller

Internet Crimes Against Children task force in Wyoming, has Flint Waters working on staff.  Four years ago, Flint Waters developed a revolutionary program to help law enforcement track computers, trading pornographic images and videos of children.  Flint’s investigations have lead to over 100 arrests and more than 30 children have been saved.

“I can’t work all the leads.  I can’t get to them.  You go home at the end of the day, knowing that the work you left stacked on your includes children that are being raped right now.  That is a tough thing to walk away from.”  -Flint Waters

    THE LATEST CRAZES

On-demand live rape.   These perverse criminals have realized younger toddlers and infants are the easiest victims because they cannot describe their abuse.

The number of pedophiles and child pornographers online would literally blow your mind, and the demand is so high for new material that the videos and photographs are getting more brutal with younger and younger baby victims.

In an attempt to shock viewers into action, Oprah read aloud an instruction manual circulating around the Internet telling predators just how to molest and rape girls as little as newborn babies.  It told how to use pacifiers to penetrate children.  It told predators to use pencils to penetrate girls depending on their age.  It also told how to videotape it, and how to not get caught.

    THE FACTS
-Agents at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children scan through up to 200,000 images a week of child porn being traded on the Internet.

-Officials only are able to investigate 2% of the leads they get. Why?  Because they're largely understaffed and can't track every case.

-Out of the 2% that are investigated, less than 1% are actually prosecuted.

-30-40% of online viewers of child pornography, use it as justification and stimulation to abuse children they have access to.

-Three out of four children being abused know the person who is abusing them.

“Chances are they're sitting next you in church.  They live next door to you.  They're professional manipulators and liars.  Its your child’s coach, teacher.  They will gain your trust to get access to your children.”

    WHAT CAN I DO?

There is a bill going before the Senate in a few weeks.  Senate Bill 1738—The PROTECT Our Children Act.

Please write your Senator and tell them to support this important piece of legislation.  Below is a letter that Oprah had on her website that you can cut and paste.

    Dear Senator:

I know that you believe, like I do, that we must do everything possible to protect children from sexual predators. That is why I am asking for your help.

Last year alone, U.S. law enforcement identified over 300,000 criminals who were trafficking in movies and pictures of young children being raped and tortured. Experts say that one in every three of these criminals has local child victims. Child pornography trafficking over the Internet has given us a trail of evidence that leads straight to their doorsteps, but the vast majority of these children will never be rescued because investigators are overwhelmed, outnumbered and underfunded.

As your constituent, I urge you to do everything in your power to pass the PROTECT Our Children Act (S. 1738, Biden-Hatch). This bipartisan legislation passed the House 415-2, but it is now the victim of petty partisan politics.

Now that we know where these children are and how to protect them, there is no excuse for the Senate to fail to take action this session.

    (Your name here)

Here is a link to help you contact your Senator…  http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These tortured and abused little ones do not have a voice.  Please speak for them!

    Jacq.

  • The past month has gone by really fast and it seemed like we’ve been busy.  Not much has happened, but time goes by so much faster the older I get.  I think that’s why we seem busier.

I was watching the McNeil twins several days a week, but now Nathan and I watch them two evenings a week.  Jayden and Eli are getting so big!  Their personalities are really evident and they realize Nathan and I aren’t mom and dad.  I love these two little men!  Zach and Michelle thanks so much for letting them be a part of our lives!

         1    2
They are really starting to grow on Nathan.  I think he finds the boys much more entertaining now that the're older.
The three of them wore each other out one day.  It was really cute.

My flowers are still alive.  There was a butterfly fluttering around them the other day.

Kelly was in town this past week!  Despite a ton of flight delay’s she got here in one piece.  The day she got here we watched the boys, it was fun to have her meet them.

The most entertaining moment of the day was when Nathan said really loud, “Wow that’s a big rack!” when he saw the moose’s antlers.  I don’t think he realized how loud he said it.  I was standing 15ft away and heard it.  Yeah… it was pretty funny.

  • Jody and Zach's new blog gave me the bug to play around with my blog layout.  (Their blog is pretty cool.  If you haven't checked out yet you should http://www.grayphotograph.blogspot.com/ )

    So, TA-DA!  New blog layout!

Nathan bought me a few of the 'Pearls Before Swine' comic books a while back.  I was reading through them and found this comic.  So in honor of the Johnson clan getting together for Thanksgiving... (double click if its hard to read)

    Thanksgiving

There is no hidden message there!  I just thought the comic was funny.  Nathan and I are looking forward to seeing all of you!

I also would like to point out that the flowers mom and I planted are still alive.

This is what they looked like when mom and I planted them.
    7Flower Box

Here's what they look like today.  I'm very proud of myself!  They aren't dead yet!  I'm already trying to think of other pots and stuff I want to add on the balcony next year.

    Flowers2

We didn't do much for the 4th.  Nathan DIDN'T want any fireworks!  I KNOW!  Would the real Nathan please stand up!?  We ended up going for a long bike ride.  There were some fireworks that we going to be at the local High School.  So we decided to walk to a field nearby to watch them.  We brought some foldable chairs and some bug spray.  We 'set up camp' in the middle of a HUGE field.  We had been there about 2 minutes when we were attacked by a horde of Minnesota state birds: MOSQUITOES!  The bug spray didn't do a darn thing.  Then the fireworks started.  But they were really dinky so we decided to start walking back home.  Halfway home and THATS when the real show started.  So we ended up watching fireworks on a sidewalk, right under a streetlamp.  Yee-Haw.    Next year we'll be better prepared.

Oh, I almost forgot...  WALL-E is a must see!  It was really good!  Pixar also had a new short film at the beginning that was HALARIOUS!  Oh wait... found it on You Tube!  Here it is ladies and gents.  Enjoy!

I haven't decided it its better than "For the Birds."  If you haven't seen that one, here it is:

Love you all and hope that you are having a good summer!

P.S.  To all my family that lives south of me, YOU ARE ALL CRAZY!  I can barely handle a Minnesota summer!    How in the world do you guys handle a southern summer?

  • Time for another update!

Right now we are having beautiful weather.  The sun has almost set and it’s in the mid 70’s.  Someone in the neighborhood has a bonfire going, so it smells great.   The kids across the street started lighting some fireworks.  Nathan is jealous, so summer is defiantly here.

My (Jacq’s) 27th birthday passed with out much fan-fare.  I haven’t decided if I feel like I’m 27 yet.  In 3 years I’ll be 30.  Yikes!  I would hope that by then we’ll be close to owning our own home with a munchkin or two keeping us on our toes.

Mom was here last week for a visit!   We haven’t seen her since October of 2006.  Defiantly way too long to go without seeing mom.  If the Johnson clan wasn’t going to be together for Thanksgiving, we would have planned a trip to MI sometime in the fall.

Mom flew in Thursday morning and brought warm weather with her.  L  Halfway to the airport we remembered that the 35W bridge was still out.  We haven’t needed to use the bridge since it collapsed, so we thought we knew where the detours were.  We didn’t.  We saw areas of Minneapolis that we had never seen before…. the new Gopher stadium under construction...   We found our way pretty quickly and picked mom up at the curb instead of the baggage claim.  I was great to see her!

9Mom and Linda On Friday we met Chris and Linda at the Olive Garden for dinner.  We went back to their house and met up with Scott and Kirsten to play board games.   If you’ve never played ‘Loaded Question’ or ‘Apples to Apples’ check them out sometime.  They’re a ball to play!  ‘Loaded Question’ is a great game to play with people you know.  If I can fit it in our suitcase for Thanksgiving, I’ll bring it.

Our apartment has a balcony off of our bedroom.  Chris and Linda buy us a hanging plant every year.  Other than a wooden swing-bench, that’s all that’s out there.  Nathan and I wanted to get some flower boxes to hang off the railing, but we had no idea what to buy.  On Saturday, mom helped us find a good flower box, dirt and some flowers.

7Flower Box  Plants and I have a love-hate relationship.  In four years of marriage I have managed to kill several house plants and at least 2 cactuses.  It has been 5 days since mom and I planted the flowers and I am proud to say that my “garden” is still alive!

Mom noticed that the bench we had, had a bad case of 'sun fading.'  After church on Sunday, we went to Lowe’s and bought some stain/sealer and re-stained the bench.  It looks great!

On Monday we went to the Science Museum and saw the new Star Wars exhibit!

                     11NMSTW

Minnesota is the last stop in its tour, so it was fun to see.  I admit that I am a huge nerd when it comes to loving Star Wars… so it was exciting to see all the models, costumes and weapons!  Nathan was bummed when found out he couldn’t play with the light sabers though.  He also wanted me to ask if I could try on Leia’s bikini outfit.  Just kidding, that costume wasn’t even in the exhibit.
